Central Bankers Dominate Karonga Stadium Match, Duwe and Idana Shine
Silver Strikers continued their impressive run in the Malawi Super League with a 3-1 victory over Songwe Border United at Karonga Stadium on Thursday. The Central Bankers moved up to sixth place in the league standings thanks to goals from Festus Duwe, Chimwemwe Idana, and Emmanuel Allan. The hosts made an early change in goals just after eight minutes, but it was Silver Strikers who took the lead in the second minute. Duwe made no mistake in slotting home a throw-in by McDonald Lameck, putting the Central Bankers in front.
After the quick goal, Silver Strikers continued to dominate the first half, creating numerous chances. Duwe came knocking again in the 29th minute, capitalizing on a good ball from Idana to make it 2-0. Idana had reclaimed possession and dribbled past two defenders before setting up the goal.
Silver Strikers kept up the pressure, but failed to convert their chances. The hosts had their first real opportunity in the 34th minute when they won a free kick in a dangerous area after a foul by Precious Sambani, but the free kick went over the bar.
Early in the second half, Idana scored the third goal for the Central Bankers after some excellent combination play between Festus Duwe and Biwnwell Katinji. Idana made a diagonal run and was picked out by a precise pass from Sambani, finishing off the move.
Silver Strikers continued to create chances, but couldn't get the fourth goal they needed. The hosts pulled one back in the 67th minute through a Wongani Kamanga penalty after a handball was spotted in the box.
Coach Peter Mgangira made several substitutions, bringing in Uchizi Vunga, Emmanuel Allan, and Innocent Shema for McDonald Lameck, Stanie Davie, and Festus Duwe, respectively. Ten minutes later, Binwell Katinji was taken out for Levison Maganizo.
Five minutes before the end of the match, substitute Emmanuel Allan scored his debut goal for the club when he finished off a move started by Nickson Mwase from defense. Maganizo provided the assist with a quick cross from the right.
"We are happy for the win, but I think we could have done better. We played well and created a lot of scoring opportunities, but we did not convert them," said Mgangira after the match. "This win is a morale booster, and we are going to keep on building on this."
The Central Bankers will face Moyale Barracks in the return leg of the 2025 Airtel Top 8 Quarterfinal match at Mzuzu Stadium next.
