Silver Strikers Secure Semifinal Berth in Airtel Top 8 with Thrilling 1-3 Win over Moyale Barracks
Rumphi Stadium was the venue for the latest installment of the 2025 Airtel Top 8 quarterfinals, where Silver Strikers took on Moyale Barracks in a high-stakes encounter. With a 0-3 lead from the first leg, Silver Strikers were favored to progress, but Moyale Barracks were not about to roll over. In the end, it was Silver Strikers who emerged victorious, securing their place in the semifinals with a 1-3 win.
The first half of the match saw Silver Strikers dominating possession, but they were unable to find the back of the net. It wasn't until the 16th minute that they broke the deadlock, thanks to a moment of brilliance from Stanie Davie. Chinsisi Maonga began the move on the right, making a good run and receiving a ball from the center. He then placed a diagonal ball inside for Davie to slot in the opening goal.
The second half saw Silver Strikers continue to press, and they soon doubled their lead. Idana was the scorer, playing magnificently to open up Moyale Barracks' defense and chip the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net.
Duwe was not content with just one goal, and in the 67th minute, he received a ball from Davie and took his time to unleash a thunderbolt from approximately 30 meters. The goal was a thing of beauty, leaving the Moyale Barracks fans stunned.
Silver Strikers made their first substitutions at the 79th minute, bringing on Precious Sambani, Emmanuel Allan, and Innocent Mtonga for Dan Sandukila, Chikondi Kamanga, and Stanie Davie. All three players made their debuts for Silver Strikers in this tournament.
Moyale Barracks refused to give up, and in the 81st minute, they pulled one back through a header from Black Allisen. However, it was too little, too late, and Silver Strikers held on for the win.
"It was a tough game, but we created a lot of chances which we did not convert more into goals. However, we are happy to have won and progressed to the semifinals," said Silver Strikers head coach Peter Mgangira after the match.
"We are not yet satisfied, as our goal is to reach the finals and fight for the top prize. We will now return to Lilongwe to prepare for our league match against Mighty Wanderers," added Mgangira.
Silver Strikers will face Civil Service United in the semifinals of the Airtel Top 8 tournament, with the first leg scheduled to take place at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on a date to be announced.
