Nigerian-Born Striker Babatunde Adepoju Makes Emotional Debut for Malawi National Football Team
Adepoju's Journey to Malawi: Gratitude, Faith, and Pride
Babatunde Adepoju, a Nigerian-born striker, made history on October 1, 2023, as he joined the Malawi National Football Team (The Flames) for the first time. In an emotional message shared on social media, Adepoju described his journey to Malawi as one filled with gratitude, faith, and pride."Malawi is now my home. Arriving in 2017, the country has given me almost everything. I’ve met coaches who have helped me to be where I am — not yet at my best, but I still believe I can do more,"
Adepoju wrote, expressing his deep connection to the country that has become his second home.
From Masters Security to Bullets: A Success Story in Malawian Football
Adepoju's football career in Malawi began with Masters Security in 2017, the same year he arrived in the country. He went on to play for Mighty Wanderers before crossing to the red side of Blantyre, signing for Bullets in 2021.
Bullets quickly recognized Adepoju's goal-scoring prowess, and his exploits earned him a move to Venda Football Club in South Africa at the end of the 2022 season. However, he returned to The People's Team on loan last year, where he continues to lead the line.
With Bullets, Adepoju has made 115 appearances, scored 67 goals, and won seven major trophies along with three Golden Boot awards across his two spells.
This season, he has been in fine form, contributing 12 goals and five assists in 23 appearances across all competitions, including Sunday's 2-1 TNM Super League win over Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium.
A Proud Moment for The People's Team and Malawian Football
Adepoju's call-up to the national team is a proud moment for Bullets and Malawian football as a whole. His journey to the national team is a testament to his resilience and dedication to the country.
"It feels good to represent this beautiful country while in this jersey. Together with my teammates and the technical team, I believe we can achieve a lot. In everything, we thank God,"
Adepoju added.
Upcoming Fixtures: Equatorial Guinea and São Tomé and Príncipe
The Flames will host Equatorial Guinea on October 9, 2023, at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, before traveling to Tunis for the away fixture against São Tomé and Príncipe on October 13, 2023.
Adepoju's journey to the national team is an exciting development for Malawian football fans, and his contributions to Bullets and Malawian football over the years have made him a fan favorite.
"Mulungu wa mphamvu, dalitsani Malawi the Flames (God of power, bless Malawi the Flames). God over everything,"
