FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves End First Round with Frustrating Goalless Draw
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves wrapped up the first round of the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football League with a goalless draw against Liberty FC at Kamuzu Stadium on Wednesday. The stalemate left head coach Heston Munthali feeling a mix of pride and frustration as his young squad finished third on the table with 28 points from 15 matches.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the Reserves failed to capitalize on their opportunities, leaving Munthali reflecting on what could have been. "I think overall the boys played very well today. We dominated possession and created so many chances, but unfortunately, we couldn't utilize them," he admitted.
Munthali, however, was quick to commend his team's work ethic and determination. "I am happy with the fighting spirit and the intensity we showed. We kept pushing until the last whistle, and defensively we were solid because we didn't allow Liberty to get many clear chances," he said.
The first season in charge of the Reserves has been a challenging one for Munthali, who is in the process of rebuilding the squad after several key players moved on. Goalkeeper Austin Chirambo and defender Edward Thengo were promoted to the senior team, while defenders Happy Mphepo and Andrew Lameck, together with wing attacker Wongani Kaponya, joined Ekhaya FC. Despite these losses, Munthali remains optimistic about the progress his youthful squad has made in the opening half of the season.
"To finish third with 28 points is not a bad achievement considering we had a few tough games along the way. The boys are still learning, and these kinds of matches will help them grow," he explained.
Looking ahead to the second round, Munthali emphasizes the importance of composure in the final third if his side is to turn promise into victories. "What we need to improve in the second round is our composure in front of goal and making sure we punish teams when we create openings," he stressed.
As FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves set their sights on the second round, they will need to address their finishing woes if they hope to contend for the championship. With Munthali's guidance and the team's determination, they may just find the key to unlocking their potential and securing victories.
