Binwell Katinji's Late Strike Gives Silver Strikers First Win in TNM Super League Second Round

Silver Strikers started the second round of the 2025 TNM Super League on a winning note with a 1-0 victory over Mighty Tigers on Saturday. The team's new signing, Binwell Katinji, scored the winning goal in the 75th minute to give Peter Mgangira's side their first three points of the second round.

The two sides had played a goalless draw in the first round at Silver Stadium. With 30 matches played so far, Silver Strikers have accumulated a total of 33 points, putting them in a strong position in the league table.

Ahead of the match, Mgangira made three changes to the side that won against Mighty Tigers in the Cup game at the same venue last weekend. Innocent Shema, Lassuli Jali, and Uchizi Vunga replaced Stanie Davie, Charles Chipala, and Zebron Kalima in the starting lineup.

The first half of the game saw both teams creating several chances but failing to convert them into goals. Lassuli Jali came close in the 12th minute when he played a one-two with Stanie Davie, creating space for the latter, who missed the target by a whisker. In the 20th minute, Uchizi Vunga exchanged passes with Jali, who turned and opened up McDonald Lameck, who made a fantastic run and provided a diagonal pass to Davie, who missed the target once again.

At half time, Charles Chipala was introduced for Davie, and Binwell Katinji came on for Zebron Kalima in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, Jali was substituted for Chikondi Kamanga.

The changes proved to be dividends for Silver Strikers as Katinji finished off a pass from Chipala in the 75th minute to give the team a 1-0 lead.

"I am happy to register a win today though we were supposed to finish the game in the first half," said Mgangira after the match. "We created a lot of chances in the first half, but we did not take them. However, we have won the game, and that's what is important. Winning against Mighty Tigers and away from home is so important for us," he added.

Felix Dumakude was introduced in the 85th minute, and the team held on to their lead to secure the win.

Silver Strikers will return home to host Chitipa United on Wednesday at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Meanwhile, George Chikooka was voted Man of the Match after some fantastic saves that kept the side in the game. "I am delighted to receive this award. I tried my best to keep the team in the game, and I am glad it paid off," said Chikooka.

Mighty Tigers' coach, Franco Ndawa, expressed disappointment with the result. "We played well and created several chances, but we couldn't convert them into goals. We will regroup and come back stronger in our next match," he said.

With the win, Silver Strikers are now in a strong position in the league table and will be looking to build on their momentum when they host Chitipa United on Wednesday.
