FCB Nyasa Big Bullets: Coach Mponda Reveals Reasons Behind Chikumbutso Henderson's Exit
Head coach of Malawian football giants, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Peter Mponda, has explained the reasons behind midfielder Chikumbutso Henderson's departure from the team. In a surprising turn of events, the club confirmed on Thursday that Henderson's contract had been terminated by mutual consent, just seven months after joining The People's Team on a two-year deal from Mzuzu City Hammers in January 2025.
Speaking during a press conference ahead of Sunday's FDH Bank Cup Round of 32 tie against Chilumba Barracks, Mponda shared his thoughts on the 30-year-old's exit. He revealed that Henderson's signing was a panic move made three weeks after his arrival due to the team losing its entire backline. The coach emphasized that the decision to terminate Henderson's contract was mutual.
"Three weeks after signing Chikumbutso, I went to the management and I told them that it was a panic signing. That time we had lost the whole backline, and we wanted numbers to start the preseason. It was a panic signing, and the management accepted," explained Mponda.
Turning to the ongoing transfer window, Mponda stressed that the team will only bring in players who can make a tangible impact on the squad. "So far, we are okay. In terms of going forward, we are scoring goals. At the back, yes, we are shaky, but we are managing. We are looking at the market and seeing who's available to come and add something. I always say that we don't want to bring for the sake of bringing; we need to bring players to add quality to the team," he said.
Mponda has already strengthened his squad with the signing of defender Khumbo Banda from Dedza Dynamos and the return of veteran forward Bright Munthali, who rejoined the club three years after leaving in 2022.
The coach's comments come as the Malawian transfer window continues to heat up, with several teams making moves to bolster their squads ahead of the new season. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are currently second in the TNM Super League table, four points behind leaders Silver Strikers.
Meanwhile, Henderson's next move remains uncertain, but one thing is for sure; his time at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets was short-lived.
