Red Lions Rule the Roost in NBS Bank NDL after First Round

Red Lions have taken the lead in the NBS Bank National Division League (NDL) 2025 after the first round, securing a top spot with 23 points following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Namitete Zitha on August 24, at Mchinji Community Ground. Mitundu Baptist, who trail behind in second place with 21 points, continue to pose a strong challenge, while Namitete Zitha sits in third place with 20 points.

Mitundu Baptist, the highest scorers in the first round with 18 goals, have shown their offensive prowess. Raheem Mtondera, their prolific striker, leads the Golden Boot race with an impressive 12 goals, six clear of Chitsanzo Saidi of FOMO FC. Meanwhile, Red Lions have demonstrated their defensive strength, conceding only four goals throughout the first round.

In a closely contested match between Chilumba Barracks and FOMO FC, Glyn Msowoya of Chilumba opened the scoring in the 29th minute, assisted by Hassan Upindi. However, Divason Daudi equalized for FOMO in the 74th minute. Upindi's overall performance earned him the Man of the Match award, while Namitete Zitha's Jafali Mpelera was voted Player of the Day.

Mitundu Baptist continued their winning streak, defeating Ndirande Stars 3-0 on August 25. Samuel Phiri, Raheem Mtondera, and Charles Mbewe scored for Mitundu Baptist, while Henderson Banda was named Player of the Match. Mchinji Villa also recorded a 2-0 win over bottom-placed Jenda United, with Stephano George and Justice Honde scoring the goals. Jafali John's commanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award.

Chintheche United and Bangwe All Stars played out a goalless draw at Rumphi Stadium, while Baka City edged Ntaja United 1-0 at Karonga Stadium through an early goal by Amon Mwakitalu. Hastings Ndau of Baka was named Man of the Match.

As the international break approaches, teams will regroup and prepare for the second round of the NBS Bank NDL, which resumes on the weekend of September 13-14, 2025. Red Lions will look to maintain their lead, while Mitundu Baptist and Namitete Zitha will look to close the gap.
