Malawi Women's Football Team to Face Lesotho in Historic Friendly Matches

The Malawi National Women’s Football Team, The Scorchers, are set to play two international friendly matches against Lesotho as part of their preparations for the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers against Angola. These matches will mark a significant shift under the Football Association of Malawi’s (FAM) transformational agenda, as the team had previously gone years without any friendly matches.

Head Coach Lovemore Fazili expressed his gratitude to FAM for securing the fixtures, stating that they will provide an invaluable opportunity to continue assessing his squad. “From the six friendly matches we have played so far, we have learnt a lot. The remaining issues will be polished up through these games,” he said.

These matches, which will take place at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Friday, 29th August and Sunday, 31st August 2025, will be the Scorchers’ seventh and eighth friendly matches of the year. Fazili emphasized that these matches are not just friendly, but rather crucial preparation for the WAFCON qualifiers in October.

Despite the importance of these matches, they will be played outside the FIFA window, meaning that foreign-based players will not be available. The Scorchers have had a challenging year so far, winning one match against Zambia and losing five to Zambia, South Africa (twice), Morocco, and Ghana.

Fazili remains optimistic about the team’s progress, stating that the opposition they have faced so far, which includes teams that consistently compete at the top level in WAFCON and the World Cup, is exactly what they need as they prepare for Angola.

These friendly matches come as part of FAM’s broader commitment to supporting the women’s team and women’s football in Malawi more broadly. Fazili expressed his appreciation for the support from the Football Association and the leadership of Fleetwood Haiya.

As the Scorchers continue their preparations for the WAFCON qualifiers, these friendly matches against Lesotho will be crucial in assessing their squad and refining their strategies. Stay tuned for updates on the team’s progress.
